Course Information

Course

  • The opening hole at Ontonagon Golf Club is a short, straight Par 4. The fairway is fairly wide, but the tee shot is slightly deceiving due to the direction of the tee box. The tee box aims you towards a long line of trees making you wonder which fairway to play. Those trees are in the left rough of the first hole. A well placed tee shot to the right side of this fairway leaves you an easy second shot into this flat green complex.

  • The second hole is a short, downhill Par 3 that requires a precise tee shot to avoid the bunkers that guard the left and right of the green.

  • The hole features a dogleg right with trees on both sides of the fairway, making placement off the tee crucial. A tee shot to the corner will leave you roughly 120 yards left to this large green. A birdie on this hole is definitely possible, but it will take a well-executed tee shot to set yourself up for a birdie.

  • The fourth hole is a dogleg left with trees protecting both sides of the fairway. The best tee shot is to cut the corner for an easy wedge shot into this green. If you play your tee shot to the corner you will be looking at a longer 2nd shot than you want on this easy Par 4. If you have a well placed tee shot this can be an easy birdie on your card.

  • The hole is a long Par 5 with out-of-bounds running up the entire right side of the hole. If you crush a drive up the fairway you will have a chance to make it to the green on your second shot, but if you cannot reach with your second, layup to 110 yards from the green for the flattest lie in the fairway to play your third shot into the hole.

  • The sixth hole is a short Par 5 with a large fairway for a big swing off this tee box. Even though the fairway is large you want to play your tee shot to the right side of this hole. This will give you the best angle to go for the green on your second shot. The green is protected by two bunkers that are 15 yards short of the green. If you do not want to challenge these bunkers, layup just short of the bunkers for the best location to attack this tricky green complex.

  • This is a difficult hole for all players. If you do not hit your drive to the top of the hill you will have a blind second shot to a green that plays downhill a significant way. If you are able to place your ball over the hill with your drive you are left with an uneven lie for your second shot. The best position is to hit the ball just to the top of the hill for the best chance of making par on this difficult driving hole.

  • Our signature hole is very intimidating with the architecture’s volcano design. This hole is very penal if you do not hit this green with your tee shot. Play the ball to the middle of the green to give yourself the greatest chance to avoid a big number on this hole.

  • Our closing hole at Ontonagon Golf Club is not much easier than our signature hole. Out-of-bounds protects the entire left side of this hole, and the green does not make it easy to get up and down if you happen to miss the green. Play to the wide section of the green to play this hole to perfection.

Established 1928

During the roaring 1920s, founders Newton Cuneo and Roy Muskatt were in Houghton in May of 1928 and had lunch with the Houghton Rotary Club. Some of the Houghton Rotarians were going to golf in the afternoon and invited the Ontonagon visitors to join them at the Portage Lake Golf Club (which was founded in 1902). Upon their return to Ontonagon the two of them proceeded with the idea of a local golf club and on June 11, 1928 the Ontonagon Golf Club organization was established.
